RLE was begun in 1989 to serve the needs of people with disabilities who have reached retirement age or are not able to be engaged in an active program. It seeks to maintain intellectual and physical skills and to teach the ability to use leisure time productively. Choice options include personal growth, wellness, safety, cooking and nutrition, gardening, self-advocacy, self-expression, creative arts, community integration, independent living skills, health and physical fitness.

The vast majority of our program participants are clients of The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and there is also an option to private pay. If you need to contact DHHS the number is 207-561-4100 (TTY 1-800-963-9490).

These are a sampling of the accomplishments and opportunities for personal growth that are available at RLE:

Typical community outings include: YWCA, basketball and bowling for exercise, fishing trips, visits to friend’s homes, Special Olympics, walking group, the Bangor Garden show, and volunteering for several charitable community causes.

The Good Times Club, a group of retired individuals in Glenburn include RLE in many enjoyable events throughout the year.

The Retired Senior Volunteer Project recognized RLE for their Cake-Bakers program for Dorothea Dix residents, and raising money for several causes including Alzheimer’s research.

Activity and Learning Groups have included Sports, Music, Sewing, Gardening, Current Events, the Red Hat Society, Woodworking, and the study of various cultures.

Elders Council meets twice a month to plan and discuss activities, develop new activities, and plan special events.

Creative Movement classes with Maureen Robinson of Robinson Ballet have been a popular exercise option for many years.

RLE entertains youngsters from the daycare center located across the street. They decorate, plan activities, and make food for the little ones and an enjoyable time is had by all.
